Summer is here and well staying completely out of the sun is pretty much unavoidable. In Maine the season is so short and we want to go to the beach, be outside, take a walk and enjoy the warm weather as much as we can.  And we should totally do that!

As a senior photographer I want to do my best to help my clients have the best senior images ever. One of the things that I always discuss and is included in my Get Ready Guide is tan lines.

Most everyone would agree tan lines can be distracting in an image.  I want your family and friends to look at your eyes, your smile first not your tan lines. Here are a few things to keep in mind when scheduling your senior session this summer.

Before your session:

·      Do your best to avoid getting tan lines. I know some of you work outdoors, play summer sports so applying sun screen can help soften the areas that are exposed so the lines are not so obvious.  Wear a bathing suit that is not going to give you tan lines on you back, chest or shoulders.
·      Sunglasses, watches, jewelry and shoes can give you tan lines.  If you cannot live without wearing your watch, alternate the wrist you wear it on each day.
·      Consider what you are wearing for your senior session, and be sure to keep an eye out for tan lines.

A Few Weeks Before:  Try on your clothes and see where you might need to be concerned. I recommend trying to stay out of the sun a week or so before your session. However, if you have tan lines you could also try to tan them out and soften them.  You want to ensure you don’t have a sunburn before your session so that your skin tones is not red from the burn.

OH NO! Your session is coming up. If you have done all you can to avoid suntan lines, and still have some here a few other tips. Consider wearing an outfit that will not show the lines around your chest, shoulders or back.  Instead of spaghetti straps something to cover your tan lines. You can also try a little self-tanner to the areas that are not tan to soften the contrast.
